🦋 @natgeo asked photographers to share their favourite spots in America. Happy be included with this phone photo I took, of flutterbies in New Orleans, a city I had the joy of getting to know to the sound of jazz music. I'm an outsider to America - growing up it was this mythical black hole that took my friends and family when they joined the Filipino diaspora, and spewed out letters, and balikbayan boxes from time to time, filled with gifts they would send back (Bath and Body Works hand sanitizers, lots of them). Now it's a place I've gotten to know a little better in adulthood, revealing itself layer by layer. New Orleans was a haven for me in America, and I can't wait to go back. 🦋 Fun fact: The Philippines' first Independence Day was also the 4th of July, the day of our independence from America. We later on moved it to the 12th of June to celebrate our independence from Spain. Today the 4th of July is Filipino-American friendship day.
