Magnetism 8: Lorentz force on charged particles - and the aurora borealis. In this experiment I used a vacuum tube with an electron gun - when heated, the gun emits and accelerates a beam of electrons. The bean is visible only because it collides with some atoms left in the tube. The faint blue light can be seen only in perfect darkness - this is why the video is a bit off focus. The magnetic field of a strong magnet has an obvious effect on the beam. As the formula of Lorentz describes, the force is perpendicular to the velocity of the particles. It means that the force changes only the direction of the velocity, but does not increase it. The magnet only bending and curling the path of the beam, but the work of the stationary field is zero on the beam. It can be recognized that the strong field can turn back the particles. This phenomenon is the basis of the magnetic confinement of charged particles.
