The arrival and front face of our Hawthorn House. The coarse and weathered stone of the arrival pathway leads you through an informal garden space, an organic and living threshold zone before you step up into the more acutely defined concrete platform which establishes the entire ground floor and garden space of the home. . . . . #editionoffice#editionofficearchitects • Built by @fluxconstruction • Landscape by @eckersleygardenarchitecture • Photo by @benhoskingphotographer
This week's Friday Design Fix is featuring Hawthorn House a concrete structure with uncompromising geometry. Hawthorn House by Edition Office presents as a beautifully textured concrete box, its interior apparently carved out by a sweeping, almost improbably wide, arch at ground level. Two monolithic pavilions shrouded in concrete rise from a landscaped platform in an skilful balance of architectural expression, material composition and comfort. Check out the concrete design via our LinkedIn page. #fridaydesignfix#hawthornhouse
@editionoffice combines pair of arched concrete shells for house in #hawthorn, victoria (australia). . #editionoffice’s project uses principles throughout, with floor-to-ceiling glazing offset from the outer shells, allowing winter sun to flood into each living space, whilst shielding the strong summer heat load. images by @benhosking1984 more on

The artist in residence studio at @artbankau Melbourne was conceived with a strong formal and material clarity in order to provide an art making and research space with its own strong sense of identity and specificity. The residency allows artists to engage with and respond to the collected archive of contemporary australian works on site. . . . . #editionoffice#editionofficearchitects • Built by @basisbuilders • Photo by @benhoskingphotographer
Hawthorn House by @editionoffice⠀ Hawthorn, VIC⠀ -⠀⠀⠀ From the Architect: A defining element of this project is the balance of seemingly contradictory states that coexist within this home. It is at once civic and domestic, deeply enclosed while being intensely open, highly exposed while being effortlessly private, it is heavy yet also surprisingly light. In defiance of its strong formal language, the spatial relationships and experiences of the home arise from a sensitivity to site and the human condition.⠀ -⠀ www.edition-office.com⠀ #editionoffice⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photographer: @benhoskingphotographer⠀ Builder: @fluxconstruction⠀ Landscape: @eckersleygardenarchitecture⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀ #australianarchitecture ...
Hawthorn House by @editionoffice⠀ Hawthorn, VIC⠀ -⠀⠀⠀ From the Architect: The ground floor living and lounge spaces in each pavilion are distinct from one another, yet they connect across the central north facing garden and courtyard. In contrast, the more private first floor sleeping spaces exist as their own elevated islands, the aspect of each being consciously framed around the three grand tree canopies of the site. The rough sawn formwork boards were stripped from the outer concrete walls, cleaned and re-used as the fencing material of the house, so that the entire perimeter of the site is composed of ...
Hawthorn House by @editionoffice⠀ Hawthorn, VIC⠀ -⠀⠀⠀ From the Architect: Our primary design response for this project was to first recalibrate the entire project site into a large and singular terrace; one grand outdoor theatre for living which peels upwards at each title boundary to form a lush garden backdrop that would appear at every viewpoint from the living areas of the home. Within this garden platform, the house is is defined by a pair of heavily textured concrete shrouds, each with its own proportion and personality, linked together by a walkway and courtyard garden. The arched concrete shrouds evolved ...
Texture and tactility surrounding the swimming pool at our Hawthorn House. The Oregon boards used to form the textured concrete shrouds of the house are cleaned and re-appropriated as the fence that surrounds the home and gardens, creating a mimetic balance of texture and tone • . . . . #editionoffice#editionofficearchitects • Built by @fluxconstruction • Pool by @domainpoolsmelbourne • Photo by @benhosking1984
